How to store skincare products properly?

How to store skincare products properly?

Introduction

Have you ever thought about how to store your skincare products? Many of us have become accustomed to “non-food” items such as skin care items have a long shelf life and can be stored with less care and somewhere with casualty. This means that we can occasionally forget to look closer at our fine skin care products and store them according to the regulations. It is important not only for the shelf life of the products but also for their effectiveness and cleanliness if we store them correctly. Let’s dive into the article where you may have your solution to store the skincare products correctly or properly.

Heat And Sun

Heat and sun can change the chemicals in your product and affect its performance – even creating an ideal environment for bacteria to grow! Some ingredients and products are more vulnerable to high temperatures than others:

Extremely sensitive products and ingredients:

  • Products containing Vitamin C (look for the ingredient ascorbic acid)
  • Anti-aging creams (look for the ingredient retinol)
  • Anti-acne products (look for the ingredient benzoyl peroxide)
  • Sunless tanning products (look for the ingredient DHA)
  • All products without preservatives (anything organic)

Moderately sensitive products:

  • Lipsticks (direct exposure to the sun can cause them to melt)
  • Brushes (can absorb moisture and bacteria)
  • Powdered products (UV rays can alter the formulation and colors)

Oxidation

Oxidation is the chemical change that occurs when a compound comes into contact with air. If make-up or skin care products oxidize, they can become discolored, dry, or clumpy – in short, they will no longer be effective.

Extremely sensitive products

  • Organic creams
  • Serums
  • Sunscreens
  • Natural oils
  • Mascara and liquid eyeliners
  • Makeup

Cool Spots

For some products, cool temperatures help slow the breakdown of key ingredients and make them last longer. Refrigerating them can limit the growth of bacteria, but not stop it.

Products you need to keep in the fridge:

  • Perfumes (if you want to keep them for longer)
  • Nail polishes (but let them come to room temperature before using)
  • All organic/preservative-free products
  • Moisturizers, eye creams, serums, and toning lotions (especially when it’s hot!)

Don’t let your products in the shower

Don’t let poor placement of your products affect their effectiveness and durability. Our Products generally do best when stored in a cool, dark environment. Of course, this does not mean that your products must not be left in the bathroom when you take hot baths – but we recommend that you store the products in a closed drawer in the meantime.

Concerning temperatures, it is a rule of thumb that your skin care products must not be exposed to UV rays and excessive temperature fluctuations, as this can affect the forms and therefore also the properties of the product. Therefore, do not leave your creams out in the sun.

Many have even taken a step further and purchased a mini-fridge to keep their products cool and refreshing. The only difference the refrigerator makes is that the product can have a cooling effect on the skin, which many find to be pleasant on particularly irritated or sunburned skin.

However, we do not recommend that you store products with oil in the fridge, as the cold temperature can affect the texture and leave the form thicker and therefore more difficult to work with.

Regardless of whether a product comes in a type, a bucket, or a pump, the cap, lid or stopper should always be put back on when you are done using the product. As soon as you open a bucket of, for example, day cream, the cream is exposed to oxygen and bacteria.

Both parts contribute to reducing the lifespan of the product, as well as increasing bacterial growth. Bacteria generally grow well in products that have a cream consistency due to the moist environment. If the products are also free of parabens, which act as preservatives, extra attention must be paid to their durability.

It is always a good idea to wash your hands before applying your skincare products. It may seem simple and perhaps even banal, but consider how many germ-infested surfaces you touch before you touch your skin.

Telephones, remote controls, door handles. Bacteria you risk passing directly onto your skin. Washing your hands before applying your product can therefore be a big step on the journey towards the results you dream of.

Keep your Skincare Products Sterile

If you would like to ensure as long a shelf life as possible for your products, then it is important not to expose them to bacteria. If bacteria gets into your face cream, it will shorten the life of the cream and it will no longer be safe to use on your face.

There are two things you can do and that is to either look for products that either have a pump or come in a tube, and if that is not possible, remember to use a product in a jar correctly. It is easiest to keep a product intact if it comes in packaging that has a pump or a tube where you can squeeze the product out. On it, you must ensure that bacteria does not get into the product itself.

If it is not possible to find a product with a pump, and you are standing with a jar, you can advantageously use a small spatula to pick up the product, so that you do not have to dip your fingers into the product and thereby risk the introduction of bacteria from your hands into the product.

Look for the shelf life label on your products

Did you know that there is a label for the durability of your skin care products? Contrary to the perception that skin care products and the like can last “forever”, there are expiry dates and shelf life after opening on most products.

If you read the product packaging, there should be a small icon for a container with an open lid, which probably says “12M” or “6M” – this means that the product can last for 12 or 6 months after opening. After this, the product will no longer be good to use. It is important to respect this instruction, as products that have exceeded their expiration date can no longer be guaranteed to be effective or even cause irritation and impurities. Therefore, always make sure that your product is still in its prime.

The very best temperature to store your skin care products is 18-20 degrees. This means that they have to find a room that is not the bathroom, that does not get too hot, and where the products can be left in the dark.

It can, for example, be to put the products in the bedroom if you keep a cooler temperature here, or in a cupboard just outside the bathroom so that they are still closer and therefore easy to get hold of when you start your skincare routine.

If you have nowhere else to put the products other than the bathroom, then have it as a rule of thumb that they should not be displayed on open shelves or on a sunny windowsill, but instead always remember to put them either in the cupboard or down in the drawer.

Sunscreen Must be Stored in the Shade

Just as with sunscreen, there is a common misconception that because the product is to be used to protect the skin from the sun’s harmful rays, it must be able to withstand a little of everything. However, that is not how it all comes together. In sunscreen, there is a so-called sun filter – and the sun filter’s effectiveness is precisely reduced by high heat exposure.

This is also why sunscreen does not last forever on the body – the sunscreen’s sun protection factor (SPF) describes how well it protects, and it is common knowledge that the sunscreen must be renewed on the body after a few hours have passed. It has to be because the solar filter breaks down at high temperatures. If you store your sunscreen directly in the sun while sunbathing, its protection will quickly deteriorate. Therefore: Remember to store your sunscreen in the shade!

Beauty products that you should keep in your fridge

Have you ever heard of a “beauty fridge”? If not, then it’s time to add the term to your vocabulary. A Beauty fridge is, in all its simplicity, a mini-fridge that allows you to store your beauty products under controlled temperatures that give them better durability and greater effect. Over the years, beauty fridges have become extremely popular in Korea and since then the popularity has also increased in the rest of the world. If you don’t have a beauty fridge, your regular fridge will also work fine.

Sheet masks

Sheet masks are delicious no matter what, but if you choose to store them in your beauty fridge, they are even more beautiful! Nothing feels better than a cooling mask on top of a hot day at the office or a sweaty workout.

Face Mists

There is nothing more refreshing than a cooling face spray on a hot day. We love formulas based on rose extract. They smell wonderful and have a soothing effect on the skin.

Eye creams

Too much salt in food or a bad night’s sleep can often result in puffy eyes—especially first thing in the morning. Make the swelling go down by applying eye cream that comes straight from your fridge. The temperature will help to slow the supply of fluid to the eye area and you will experience that the skin is relieved and calmed down.

Skincare tools

Jade rollers, face sculptors, and massage tools – the beauty fridge is made for them! By storing your skin care tools at low temperatures, they will help reduce facial swelling when you use them. And it will also feel fantastic!

Not all products are made for the fridge. Any oil-based product – especially those with coconut oil – should be stored at room temperature, otherwise they risk solidifying or separating. In addition, it is a good idea to be consistent with the storage. It is important to remember to put products back in the fridge, as constant temperature changes can destroy the forms. Last but not least, it is important to store preservative-free products in the refrigerator to improve shelf life and prevent bacterial growth.
